Last night I had a zoom call with three of my oldest friends. We are all experiencing this situation very differently. It is interesting how we each have our own challenges and benefits. I haven’t done many zoom calls, despite it being the most popular way to communicate in these times. I find it difficult to find time and energy to engage. Prior to lockdown I would skip out of my house and meet friends in person, which was more enjoyable as I was out of reach of the happy little people and could relax knowing I was off duty. Not the case with a zoom call, they can still reach me!

Tuesday mornings there is an online yoga class but like Sunday, the relaxation part has to be aborted due to the girls arguing. It’s really hard to include my own needs within the long days of childcare. I know it is my job as their mother to love and care for them, but it gets a bit annoying that when I’m hungry I have to feed three other people first. How lovely it must be to only have to meet your needs.

When I went food shopping yesterday, I picked up a finger painting book for the girls. It’s really nice as it has pages for them to complete where you print a finger and add drawing to the print to make it a bee, or a bird. It holds their attention for a while and ticks the art and creativity off the home schooling list for today. Whilst they are occupied I prep dinner and put it into the slow cooker, Spaghetti Bolognese, one of the few dishes most of the family will eat. Twin One is still very limited with what she will eat and is reluctant to try new things without massive resistance. I add red wine to the dinner, knowing full well I’ll be able to finish the bottle off this evening. I also add rosemary from the new garden plants, which makes me feel like Barbra from The Good Life.

The happy little people really like it when we all sit for dinner at the same time. They enjoy the family banter and are beginning to learn how to converse, though it’s not always appropriate topics. Husband and I prefer to eat after the happy little people but we recognise the importance of this time to them, especially as we both come from fairly big families ourselves. Child One asks the question if you were a dinosaur, what one would you be? Ironically Child One named the girls as dinosaurs before they were born. Just before the twelve-week scan he announced there were two babies (he was three at the time, I have no idea how he knew this). He named them T-Rex and Dino before they arrived, these were the names we used on the board in the baby special care where they spent their first 10 days. Husband replies that he would be a T-Rex, Twin Two claims her T-Rex title, Twin One a Diplodocus, which seems way too placid for her. I am a Pterodactyl as I can relate to the screech when I’m loosing it at the happy little people and immediately give a demonstration. Funnily enough, they recognise it.

The evening news announces that the government has changed its mind about having all children return to school by the end of the month and a school email follows to confirm.
