Getting up earlier and giving myself longer to wake up is working and I am finding I am not as grumpy in the mornings. Quite often I manage to creep downstairs and get one cup of tea in before the happy little people get up. Child One is always awake first, but he’s happy to stay in his pit of a bed reading. I have a cup of tea in the garden; Cat brings me a dead bird, bad Cat.
I had an online food shop delivered last night, but there was an issue with the computers so consequently I don’t think I am being charged for the shopping. There were some missing items and also some not ordered items but even so, that means there is still quite a lot of free food. We’ve had a bag of bagels and the wrong type of bread delivered, I pop them over to my neighbours as I know they might eat them, we won’t and I don’t want them to go to waste, even if I didn’t pay for them.
Child One gets on with his schoolwork, he is reading Treasure Island for English. The lesson today is about writing an essay comparing fictional pirates to real pirates within history. He needs quite a lot of support, so I feel I’m learning quite a lot today too. I also manage to persuade the girls to complete some worksheets my mum has sent over. They actually pick up a pencil and after squabbling over what the day is and the date, proceed to work together on the sheets. One English, one Maths, it’s better than nothing and then an hour on PurpleMash. While all three happy little people are engaged at the table I manage to iron the few bits in the ironing basket. It’s the small victories.
I welcome Husband’s early finish from work to take over supervision and head off to replace the missing food items, as typically they were all the beige frozen variety and my stock is low. No sooner have I returned home, I receive a phone call from my brother-in-law, my mum is about to be taken off to hospital in an ambulance because she seems to have had some form of stroke. And just like that, life throws another curve ball in and the adrenalin is pumping. By the time I reach my mums house she is no longer there, she’s gone, complainingly to hospital. My sister and brother-in-law fill me in. She was on the phone to my sister and went funny on the phone; fortunately, my sister had the instinct to call for help. We put an overnight bag together and wait for an update. Due to the pandemic nobody could go with her to the hospital and we won’t be able to visit so we are reliant on phone updates and hope to be able to drop a bag to whichever ward she is admitted to. I manage to do this at 11pm, she’s on the Acute Stroke ward. She hasn’t had any further episodes and will receive a CT scan and various other checks, although initially she appears to be recovering well, which is positive. Although some of the text messages she sends me don’t fully make sense.
