It’s starting to get to me, not having the time and space to re-set my home. In pre-pandemic times I would blitz the house, not necessarily weekly but periodically. When it gets to the point it’s starting to make me twitch, like now. When your feet come away from the kitchen floor filthy and you consider taking a sample and sending it off for an arts and culture grant, and calling it ‘Sole Dirt’. (Ahh do you remember the time of the arts sector had cash and projects were funded?). Feels prehistoric now. I don’t consider myself political, I don’t have enough intelligence or knowledge, but in my life, over the years, I have seen the arts and education sectors receive less and less funding over the years and it makes me really sad. I don’t want to consider a world without an arts industry; to me there would be no colour.
Also, in the pre-historic time, where I didn’t have children, or when I had one happy little person and I was working and therefore contributing financially, we had a cleaner. I know that this is very middle class and a privileged thing to do, but at the time it was a good financial investment and a way to stop the resentment in our house. Collectively we decided to employ someone to do what neither Husband or I wanted to do in the little free time we had from work. Well, this is really not the case anymore, it mostly falls to me and the old resentment is creeping back. So I tentatively speak to Husband and explain the state of the house and list the basics of what needs doing to re-claim some hygiene and order to OUR home. I start the kitchen blitz while he considers this and turn my music speaker up so I can ignore the happy little people’s demands of how they will be entertained today.
Of course, Husband turns into the male equivalent of Mary Poppins and involves the happy little people in his contribution of cleaning. Oh how they love the fun parent. Handing out jobs, they are delighted and given ownership of the hoover and dusters. Please note, whenever I have attempted this it has failed miserably and resulted in me spectacularly losing my temper with the happy little people’s incompetence and having to re-do anything and everything they have touched. In my defence they were all under the age of six at the time, but that’s not the point! Those social media memes and images of a mother and child each with a duster in their hands, they make me rage. Even more so than the ones that say leave the dust and spend precious time with your child.
So self centred Sunday isn’t happening this week but our home is getting cleaned. I did also manage to get back in the front garden for another hours session of weeding. It’s the small wins right?
